There are no accounts, no analytics, no advertising and no trackers. KarlTrain is not funded by knowing things about you.

What stays on your phone

• Your stations, travel preferences and alarm settings.
• Your ride history — every journey you confirm. It is never uploaded.
• Your starred trains.

Deleting the app deletes all of it.

Location

Location is off by default and the app works fully without it, from the timetable. If you turn it on, your position is used on your device to find the nearest station and to estimate how long it takes you to reach a platform. Your location is never sent to our servers and never leaves your phone.

What is sent, and only when you ask

• Reminders. Setting one sends the train and station to our server so it can send you a notification. It is deleted after the train has gone.
• Rider reports. Reporting a broken toilet or a full bike car sends the train, the type of problem and your optional note. Your device identifier is hashed before it is stored, and reports are deleted after 12 hours.
• Shared ride links. A link you create follows the train, which is public data. It carries nothing about you, and it expires after six hours.

Notifications

If you enable them, Apple issues this app a device token so notifications can be delivered. It identifies the installation, not you, and it is deleted when Apple tells us it is no longer valid. Your iOS version and app version are stored with it, so a notification that fails on one version can be told apart from one that fails everywhere.

Where the train data comes from

Schedules and live positions come from 511.org. Map tiles come from OpenStreetMap via CARTO. Neither receives anything identifying you from this app.

Children

KarlTrain is not directed at children and collects nothing that could identify one.
